Very Good Modern War films

One of the many things that I like about Modern War films is that some of the good ones are actually based on real events. So, they provide real information.

In this post, I'm going to talk about my personal favourites. The ones which caught my attention in cinema and I just couldn't wait for them to come out on DVD or Digital download. I'm going to make a list of 8 very great. This isn't a top to bottom list over which I like better, I like them all.

1. The next is another film that's been nominated for many Oscars, including Best Picture, American Sniper. As a film which shows itself really great in terms of its character study, and as a war legend. Clint Eastwood's biopic about Chris Kyle, an elite Navy Seal who was reported to have 255 kills, and it shows the tough and harrowing experiences many soldiers go through while serving for their country. Starring Bradley Cooper as Chris Kyle, the film shows his life both at home with his wife and on the battlefields of Iraq. I think this film is really great both tense fully and dramatically, but despite the warm reception, there are just some moments in it though which are a bit odd. Again, there were some historical inaccuracies which are a part of Clint Eastwood's element, but there's also a "fake baby" too which are part of the cons in the film. Never the less, its film still worth watching.

2. Both Sicario and Sicario 2 are both based around the Mexican Drug War where U.S. Agency and Military Task Force members escalate a war against Mexican Drug Cartels. Both films show the drug cartels making acts of terror as well as smuggling drugs and members across the border, and how the US government authorises to capture or kill anyone who is involved.

  • The first film directed by Denis Villeneuve is around a story where an FBI agent is enlisted by the CIA to help a task force takeout a Cartel member. Packed with shocking scenes and stunning cinematography which was nominated along with a lot of accommodations and all the cast including Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin make outstanding performances.

  • The second film directed by Stefano Sollima is where the cartels' traffic terrorists across the border, so the US escalates a war between the drug cartels. The film is described as an "anthological sequel" to Sicario and both Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin still make great acting.

The producers are in the development of a third film later on...

While many people really like the first film, I personally think they have different settings to how the film's seen and directed. While Sicario is more an atmospheric thriller, Sicario 2 is more of an action-packed thriller. Both films are equally as great as each other in separate manners in my mind.

3. The Outpost

I've just seen it and I'll say this... The film lived up to my expectations.
What I like about The Outpost is that it shows the realism of conventional army soldiers dealing with the difficulties of counter-insurgency, where you have to win the hearts and minds of the Afghan people.

"A small team of U.S. soldiers battle against hundreds of Taliban fighters in Afghanistan." But I know what it's about. It's based on a battle in October 3rd, 2009 which lasted for 13 hours at a US Army Combat Outpost called 'COP Keating', where 50 to 60 US Army soldiers were defending the area from 150 to 300 Taliban fighters. I'm looking forward to this one. The film is starring, Scott Eastwood, Caleb Landry Jones and Orlando Bloom, and it's directed by Rod Lurie and it's his best film yet!

It also shows an understanding portrait of the soldiers involved, the chaos and claustrophobia in both their position in the base and during the battle, and doesn't glorify too much on anything. What makes the film stand out the most is it's accuracy to the real story and the cinematography shows details of setting which shows how much of a terrible position the troops from Bravo Troop 3-61 CAV called home.

Approved with positive reviews from critics and praised by veterans, including those who fought in the battle, The Outpost is a new modern war film that's guaranteed to grab your attention with dramatic unease, visceral entertaining battle sequences, and even acknowledgement from the soldiers who were there.

4. My fifth favourite is Lone Survivor. This war film is both fantastic and incredible when I first saw it at the cinema. An underrated film from Director Peter Berg, Lone Survivor is about a true story of how a team of Navy Seals were on a covert operation to neutralize a high-level target during the War in Afghanistan. But later on, it turns from a manhunt to a fight for survival when the team is getting hunted down. The film shows respect to the actual people involved, along with courage and heroism in this thrilling dramatization. What makes this film stand out is how it shows the action scenes thrilling and harrowing. If I was to tell an example of Sound Editing and graphics screenshots, this would be one of them. Also, it didn't glorify the story too much, it didn't show jingoism that much. I think much of the story is very believable. Starring Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster and Eric Bana. Lone Survivor is proficiently made and has a technical ferocity that can not be denied.
